Preparing for Divorce During the Holidays

Did you know that January has unofficially been dubbed Divorce Month?

Why is that? Well, who wants to spoil the holiday season with talk of divorce – especially if they have children? If couples are leaning toward divorce, the tendency is to “gut it out” through the holidays so that the family can have one last holiday season together before they split.

In most cases, one (or both) parties have a pretty good sense of whether or not they are headed there. (Watch out for these signs that YOUR marriage is headed for divorce.)

So if that’s you, you have a heavy load ahead of you this month. Not only are you trying to prepare for the holidays, you’re also thinking about how you’re going to break it to people, deciding how to proceed, trying to envision a parenting plan and how to split assets, who is going to keep the family home, what will Auntie Marge think, etc. Plus the added weight of pretending that it’s going to be OK for people (or yourself).

There’s a lot that you will have to bear on your own – but not everything. This month I’m going to post regularly on preparing for divorce: what you can do to get your head around it, things to know, places to find information, where to find support, and more. Because even if you’re waiting until the New Year to deal with it, stuffing your feelings about it are probably not going to make things any easier in the long run.

At least for me, when I have something looming, gathering information and making lists can help me stave off anxiety and fear: two things that DO NOT go great with the holiday season!

If you haven’t joined our Open Space Divorce Support Group, now might be a good time to do it. This month we will be meeting online on Dec. 13  from 6-8 Mountain Time with a boundaries coach who will share some easy, actionable tips for creating sustainable, safe feeling boundaries with your loved ones.

On the morning of Dec. 3 I will be co-hosting a divorce information workshop for women with 3 other divorce professionals – you’ll get a boatload of info from me, a divorce attorney, a CDFA, and a realtor and it’s a great way to quickly get a fairly complete overview of the divorce process in Colorado – you can sign up for that here

I’m also offering 3 complimentary divorce coaching sessions in the month of December to the first 3 qualifying applicants – you can sign up to apply using this form. If you are selected, I’ll reach out to you personally to discuss your needs, answer questions, and get something onto my calendar so that we can dig into your situation efficiently. This is a limited opportunity worth $200, so if you’re interested, act now!

And if you’re just looking for some tips for how to avoid overload during the holidays,  you can start here. If you want to know my family’s famous “Angel Charlotte” recipe, hit me up here (and yes, it’s mysterious…and also easy and fun!).  If you want to learn more about Open Space, check out my website. If you’re looking for a Facebook divorce support group, check out Divorce Club

If you don’t follow me on social media, you might miss posts in December that deal specifically about how to prepare for divorce – emotionally, legally, personally, and financially. You can connect with me on Facebook, Instagram, Google, TikTok, and YouTube – find links here.

I’ve spent years cultivating community and connection for people who are going through divorce because it’s my belief that you shouldn’t go through it alone. Yes, it’s a hard transition, but if you are armed with support and knowledge, it’s a whole lot easier. So stay tuned for more information…and support. I’m here for you.

Sending you and your family the warmest wishes for the holiday season ahead, regardless of where you are in your journey.
